nice one Roger, I did have great problems on the same issue with sat maps with an older version of gimp (2.2 if I remember correctly), since then I gave up.
I never inspected that deep as you did, so I don't even know if the svn version has any improvements (but I noticed a speedup in applying an image manipulation filter).
