Hey,
i know exactly what you mean. I do that in Photoshop.
Maybe you could drag it on the TAB itself? 
Maybe it's another point for the compare-view i mentioned.
Maybe that could be accomplished with two open Gimp-Applications...

Maybe... someday ;)
