The build system's developer (Daniel?) seems to use the current
automake version 1.10 (remember our mkdir_p vs. MKDIR_P problem), so 
updating might be a good idea.

And we still don't know why that variable was empty. Can you send me 
your Makefile? (Just to me, not to the list.)
