I've added the "glossary.sort" parameter to stylesheets/plainhtml.xsl.in 
a few weeks ago, and it works fine for me (German) too.

It may be, however, that this is a new parameter and not yet supported 
by your docbook-xsl version (my version is 1.74.0).
Check e.g.
	/path/to/your/docbook/stylesheets/.../xhtml/glossary.xsl
if there is a string "glossary.sort".
