[Gimp-user] 8-bit Nintendo character effect in gimp

Hi,
I have several characters and I want to make them into 8-bit Nintendo 
characters. Something like this:
http://internetsiao.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/nintendo-characters-evolution.jpg 
but only the characters from first 3-4 rows from the top.
The original character I have are very cartoony and similar to these: 
http://www.theoriginof.com/images/scooby_doo/scooby_doo.jpg but these 
are only example.
Im just wondering if there is a way to get such an effect in gimp or if 
there is a tutorial somewhere to do this or do I have to re-draw them again?
