[Gimp-user] layers dialogue

On the layers dialogue, there is a small rectangular image of each layer.
All lined
up vertically.
Some of the layers have a second rectangular image, to the right of the
lineup.  What
is the significance of the 2nd image?    What is it? Where does it come
from?  Does it
have any use?
