Furthermore, if you want specifically the airbrush, you can do that 
with layer masks. 
Fill a  layer above the one you want to paint with your pattern, 
create a layer mask for it, and select Black (all trasnparent). Then 
use paint on this mask with white, using wahtever tool you want.
