[Gimp-user] Export Dialog usage

Hi all,

when saving complex images to simple file formats (say multiple layers to PNG)
the Export Dialog pops up, offering two choices:
- Export creates a copy of the image prior to saving, while 
- Ignore feeds the image directly to the responsible file format plug-in.
This enables some special features, like saving only the current layer.

I'm looking for some usage examples of these special features.
Which of them are actually used? What is the workflow where they are useful?
