Hi Joel, just shoot your photos around sunrise/sunset (at the right day).
Ken Rockwell explains:

which are the shots I show, only exists for 60 seconds at most,

For changing colors using gimp, you can play with the various commands
in the "color" section, e.g. Hue-Saturation
