[Gimp-user] strange brush behavior

I've been using gimp for several years, and so am fairly
familiar with its expected behavior.

Two computers here -- both running SuSE11, with
Gimp 2.4.5.

One computer, Gimp works fine.
Other computer, all of the drawing tools (pen,pencil,
brushes, eraser, clone tool, etc.) leave bright green
streaks when swept across the photo.

This is with the mouse button NOT engaged.  Not
pressing any mouse button, just moving the tool
across the photo, draws these artifacts which do
not then become a part of the file (moving the
photo around on the screen erases these green
artifacts, but any attempt to place a brush back into
the photo makes the green streaks.

Any ideas?
