You can currently only select on layer at a time.

The size of the selection can easily be seen in Windows -> Dockable
Dialogs -> Pointer, but you need GIMP SVN trunk for that (i.e. it will
be in GIMP 2.8). The enhancement request was:
Bug 138101 – Pointer (Information) tab should display selection bounds
