Sadly the current Safari just hangs there waiting for the image to load.
Only a nightly webkit works correctly. I googled this derivate out[1],
but that would mean merging this guy's changes into our code. We scale
images larger than 800px...

Since you had questions about the source of that script, it comes from
the interface jquery plugins[2].
