This was not my decision, but I've used thickbox in other sites and
the desired functionality is that you overlay the image into the
current page, instead of displaying just the image.  You do not lose
focus, the site stays in the background but you get much more visible
space for the image.

Animations are not really crucial for that, but they give some
feedback while the image loads and as it was originally meant for
full-size images, that can be a while.

That said, I've usually seen it used with pre-sized images and for
that you could probably do without the animation but still use the
overlay effect for increased size.
