Could you summarise for me what the wiki's purpose is? I couldn't find a

I saw the new questions section in the wiki[1] and I think maybe I'm missing its
raison d'etre. If a new question gets posted to it, it can't immediately be
answered because it's only been asked once. But if the question is already
present on the page, no one is surely going to feel the need to repeat it, so
how can it ever become a FAQ?
The logical place to get real FAQs is surely the mailing lists where people are
posting questions all the time. I noticed today, for example, that a number of
people have expressed an interest in HDR images. This would be a good candidate
for a FAQ.
