Maybe you should use versions as "tags" and no just one specific 
category per item.
I mean, if a plugin is compatible with 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4 tag it with 
those versions.
If it's 2.2 only and won't work in 2.4, tag it as 2.2 only and so on.
That way will allow to filter 2.2 that won't work in 2.4 and similar 
situations.
