What makes you think that development should be driven by user wishes?
We have a vision for GIMP and we are targetting a particular group of
users. We have done workflow evaluations and the UI team knows pretty
well what's important. I don't think it helps if we let everyone
participate in this process. We are not creating software for everyone.
We are creating software to get some rather well-defined jobs done. And
we are creating it because it is fun to develop software. Allowing
everyone to tell us what we should do is going to take the fun out ot if
it and it is going to distract us from the goals we have set up for
GIMP.
Don't get me wrong. It's important to get feedback from users. But we
don't want to introduce a voting system simply because we don't
implement features because of their popularity. We implement them
because they fit with the product vision. And in the end they get
implemented because some developers find the time and motivation to
actually write the code.
